The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office IV-A reached out to students of Pambayang Kolehiyo ng Mauban last February 14 for the implementation of the Tara Basa! Tutoring Program (TBTP) that will begin by May this year.
The Pambayang Kolehiyo ng Mauban, located in the town of Mauban, Quezon, is one of the partner state and local universities and colleges of the Department in Quezon Province for the said program. Other partner schools include the Southern Luzon State University and the Philippine Normal University South Luzon.
The TBTP is a program of the DSWD that aims to support the literacy development of incoming Grade 2 pupils who are identified as struggling readers.
In the TBTP implementation, college students will be engaged as tutors to conduct tutorial sessions for children or as youth development workers to conduct Nanay-Tatay Sessions for parents. In exchange for their engagement with the program, the tutors and youth development workers will receive cash assistance, which they can use for their educational needs.

During the orientation with the students, the DSWD called for the students to be part of the program not only for the cash assistance but more importantly, to help improve the literacy of the children in their province and also to develop their skills in dealing with children and the community.
In Quezon Province, a total of 3,500 pupils are targeted to be reached for this year’s tutoring program and engage 980 college students as tutors and youth development workers. [with reports from MUAbcede]
