SLPAs participate on marketing workshop to improve their livelihood


Various members of Sustainable Livelihood Program Associations (SLPAs) in the region participate in the series workshop on basic marketing strategies conducted in Batangas, Laguna, and Rizal province from September to October 2018.

The workshops were held in Ibaan, Batangas last September 25; Paete, Laguna last Sept 28; and Tanay, Rizal last October 30. Each workshop is participated by members of different SLPAs from the three provinces.

The said workshop, entitled Tatak Pangkabuhayan aims to teach basic marketing strategies to SLPAs particularly on developing content through their SLP stories, label-making for their products or services and managing their social media page. Social development

Aside from these topics, the workshop also served as an avenue where established SLPAs shared their experiences in sustaining their livelihood for several years.

Ms. Patronecia “Rose” Amparo, member of KA-BI-SIG SEA-K, an SLPA which is operating for more than two decades in Padre Garcia, Batangas, shared their struggles and triumphs as an association.

“Ilang taon na kami pero meron at meron pa ring nagiging mga problema. Kahit saan naman hindi madali ang magmaintain ng business, kinakailangan madiskarte ay magexplore ng bagong bagay para magpatuloy ang negosyo. Kailangan din open tayo na ibahagi sa iba ang ating mga karanasan”, she humbly shared.

She shared that aside from their processed meat products such as tapa and corned beef, they are also venturing in micro-financing.

On the other hand, for a newly organized SLPA like MIPTA of Cavinti, Laguna, the workshop helped them to brainstorm and develop strategies for their new product. In just a year, they were able to expand their livelihood from mere vegetable farming to developing atchara made from chili peppers which they can no longer sell as vegetables.

“Ngayon nagsisimula na po kaming gumawa ng iba pa naming produkto, makakatulong po na may ganito kaming basic na kaalaman sa pagpapackage ng aming produkto at pagpopost sa Facebook para makita ng ibang pwedeng maging costumer”, said by Ms. Marian Sibuyo, president of the MIPTA SLPA.

The workshop also gave these SLPAs an opportunity to evaluate their existing strategies in order to improve and apply what they have learned. Furthermore, those SLPAs which have existing labels and social media posts also developed a more detailed content for their materials.

Mr. Geronimo Palmero, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer (MSWDO) of Paete, Laguna emphasized in his message the importance of such skills enhancement to the SLP participants.

“Napakahalaga ng ganitong mga pagsasanay para mas maging matagumpay pa ang mag proyekto ng SLP sa iba’t ibang munisipyo at lungsod dito sa ating rehiyon at makahikayat pa tayo na mas maraming pang mamimili at tumangkilik ng sariling nating mga produkto (SLPAs)”, he shared.

This activity was also a follow-through on the basic livelihood training attended by the participants long before the actual implementation of their projects.

After the workshop, these selected participants from the SLPAs are instructed to discuss their workshop outputs to the rest of the SLPA members to solicit opinions and ideas to further improve their marketing tools and strategies.

Catalysts of change

After each workshop, these participants joined in the information caravan and distributed various Information and Educational Communication (IEC) materials about the DSWD programs and services to residents near the venue of the workshop.  

Before the information caravan, there was a brief orientation on the programs and services so that they can accurately answer the questions posed by those who will receive the materials.

According to the Regional Information Officer, Mr. Joseph Constantine Arceo, the program participants and beneficiaries have a vital role in disseminating truthful information about the agency on the ground.

“Aside from their first-hand experience directly working with the agency, these participants somehow have a responsibility to be well-informed and spread genuine information about DSWD in their respective areas to lessen the confusion and misconceptions of the public on our programs and services”, he shared.

The information caravan is a nationwide initiative of the Department to disseminate information on its programs and services specifically on far-flung areas.

The Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) is a capability-building program of the DSWD that provides suitable income-generating opportunities to identified poor, vulnerable and marginalized program participants to help improve their socio-economic well-being through micro-enterprise development or employment facilitation.
