A total of 123 indigenous peoples (IPs) who belong to the Sama-Bajau tribe in Batangas City completed cash-for-work projects under the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Modified Conditional Cash Transfer (MCCT) program.

Implemented from November to December 2015, the projects include the renovation of the multi-purpose hall in Brgy. Malitam, construction of a bamboo bridge in Brgy. Wawa, creation of improvised trash bins and cleanup drive.

The said IPs received a total of PhP314,285.87 worth of cash assistance after completing the said projects.

The Sama-Bajau beneficiaries were provided with 15 days to finish the multi-purpose hall and bamboo bridge projects while another 10 days were allotted for the trash bin project and the clean-up drive.

In support to the said projects, the local government unit of the two barangays provided construction materials and supplies. They also conducted orientations on waste management to educate the beneficiaries on proper waste disposal and promote the importance of having a clean environment in their community.

Nanie Asiya Balani, a Sama-Bajau and an MCCT beneficiary from Brgy. Malitam, thanked the DSWD for the cash-for-work projects.

“Nagkaroon kami ng oportunidad para kumita nang maayos. Hindi na namin kailangang magpagala-gala at mamalimos sa daan,” said Balani.

The MCCT for IPs is a modification of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program that is designed to reach out families who are not covered by the regular Pantawid Pamilya program because of their being excluded from the Listahanan database of poor households generated from the house to house assessment last 2009.

Aside from the Sama-Bajaus in Batangas Province, the MCCT program in the CALABARZON Region also covers IPs in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas such as the Dumagats in the remote areas of Rizal Province and the Aetas in Quezon Province.# With reports from LSCabanos
